Q: I donít wear corsets permanently, only for a week or two at a stretch. After a while, I get bored with it and stop. But after a few days, I feel a strong need to put it on again, so I am wondering if I am psychologically dependent on it--the urge is very hard to resist.--Tiberiu  (4/15/01)

A: The psychological dependence is quite common. Many habitual lacers cite this desire to be corsetted. There may be several neuro-stimulants involved that are released by the brain, but I can only speculate, since no formal study exists, as far as I know. Physical dependence is primarily a function of exercise. If regular exercise is not performed, dependence will be difficult to avoid, due to muscle atrophy.
