Q: My girl friend is to wear orthopedic corsets for the next six months after a lumbago operation (double nucleotomy). She would like to know if the ugly plastic contraptions could be replaced by some optically more appealing real corsets. --- "Tom" (9/16/98)

A: I am never supposed to interfere with other doctors´ prescriptions or advices. It is the patient's own doctor who is in command. Thus, this particular matter should be discussed with him. However, there are good reasons to believe that an old-fashioned well-boned corset can do the same work as a plastic contraption. And if, after six months, the patient might feel the benefit of a further period of corseting, then a "real" corset can be of assistance and, moreover, look much more fashionable.
